Ladybug Book Awards

And the winners are…the young readers!

The best aspect of the Ladybug Award, an annual award honoring the best in children’s picture books, is that the final judges are New Hampshire children in kindergarten through third grade. A main goal of the Ladybug Picture Book Award is to foster early literacy and there’s no better way to do it than to have the kids read the books, then vote for a winner. This year a whopping 22,845 votes were cast. The Day The Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers took first prize attracting 38 percent of the votes.

The Ladybug Award involves a lot of work throughout the year. A committee of children’s librarians has the difficult task of selecting a mere ten titles from all the wonderful books that have been published in the last three years. Voting takes place during the month of November and the winner is announced at the end of the year.

Any award that honors well-written, beautifully illustrated picture books while encouraging children to read is a winner. Many thanks to the Center For The Book At The New Hampshire State Library for this program.
